Exhibitors and visitors also agree about trends too. As well as a noticeable amount of nature and wild animals for girls, and a strong fascination with ‘space’ and other discovery journeys for boys, the overall impression is much more toned down and quiet when contrasted with the loud, bright and ‘bling’ children’s fashion we have seen in previous seasons.

positive vibe kf #16
At the 16th edition of kleine fabriek, last Sunday 13 and Monday 14 January in the Amsterdam RAI, there was a refreshing and positive atmosphere. A busy Sunday, with a striking number of international visitors, was matched by the quality of the visitors attending on Monday, a day that traditionally attracts more press contacts. Feedback has hardly ever been so unanimous: the industry has finished its grumbling about the economic tide, the lion seems to have been tamed. “We all need to work a little bit harder and be more inventive, to break the cycle. Industry is the tough metal-grey area for ‘high trend-sensitive’ denim- and sportswear-related brands like colourful underwear label Björn Borg, equally famous sixty-year-old surfer label O’Neill, headstrong Dutch gsus sindustries and modest Belgian brand American Outfitters. Besides these ‘big boys’ there are also younger children’s fashion successes like Amsterdam’s Tumble ’n Dry, and Japan Rags’ cool little sister Little Cerise. Ode to photo album in Foam Amsterdam
Album Beauty is an ode to the vanishing era of the photo album. Creative Erik Kessels (1966, The Netherlands) made his career in advertisement and is a collector of vernacular photography. He spent many days at outdoor markets and junk stores, collecting amateur narratives of family history. For photography museum Foam he used these to create an unorthodox installation.

Sonpakkies are produced in South-Afrika. In this way, Dutch brand Sonpakkie contributes to the development of the South-African economy. Wearing Sonpakkies means well-protected outer fun (UV protection factor 80) for babies, kids and teens, looking cool anyway. In the Star area at kleine fabriek you will find their collection, that consists of rash- and suntops, shorts and skorts and caps, heads and bandana’s. Good to know: to reinforce the battle against skincancer, 4% of all Sonpakkie’s turnover is donated to a good cause that fits the brand (in 2011 for example it was the Dutch Cancer Society KWF).

kf ♥ scheepvaartmuseum
With the reopening of the renovated Scheepvaartmuseum (National Maritime Museum) last year, Amsterdam has regained one of its most important museums. Het Scheepvaartmuseum houses one of the world’s biggest collections of nautical art and artefacts, including globes, paintings and ship models. The collection is the backbone of various exhibitions about the Netherlands and the country’s elemental connection with the sea. Stimulating, interactive exhibits – with film and sound fragments – bring 500 years of maritime history to life for all ages. Make sure to visit ‘De Zeereis’ (Voyage at Sea) to experience a virtual sea battle of the 17th century. Another big attraction, both literally and figuratively, is the replica of the Dutch East Indiaman the Amsterdam, docked alongside the quay.

Amsterdam has got a new cultural hot spot. Eye, the Dutch national film institute, moved from it’s cosy historic building in Vondelpark to the waterfront on the North side of the city, opposite Amsterdam Central Station. It’s new home is quite spectacular, giving the impression a space shuttle landed on the banks of the IJ. Eye is more than a movie theatre, showing productions that span the entirety of international film history: from silent films dating back to the start of cinema to the newest digital productions. It is also an exhibition centre and organises all kinds of projects and events related to film. For children there is a special program a few days a week, with special events during the holidays. Last but not least: it is a great spot to have lunch or diner with a view, inside or outside. Pedestrians and bicyclists can hope on a free ferry behind CS to reach Eye.

it’s a dotty world out there!
Those of you that visited kleine fabriek in January will probably remember our ‘dot’ theme. And it’s funny how you start seeing dots everywhere once you got them on your mind. We noticed plenty in the collections shown by exhibitors. Maybe we were all inspired by 84 year old Japanese artist Kusama and her World of Dots. She began using polka dots in her artistic work when she was only 10 and they have been part of her artistic signature ever since. We’d love to check out her present exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane Australia, or Tate Modern in London, but even online she is amazing!

Exhibitors were thrilled about the fact that foreign retailers (more than 20% of the total number visiting) and above all Belgians and Germans, again found their way to the trade show. Right at the entrance, two huge gates showed the way to the home & gift department and the KF allee. The baby brands and “teen jeans” were also clearly grouped together. New nearly ‘couture’ brand My Little Dress Up showed their collection in KF allee, along with Little Marc Jacobs, Yporqué, Soft Gallery, Lucky Wang, Twin-Set Girl, Ninaluna, Dreamers, Patrizia Pepe, Etnies, Rubber Duck and Sprout by Gro.
My Little Dress Up’s designer duo was very satisfied about their first trade show experience. “Our collection is not that easy so we are super happy with all positive reactions we received here. All significant magazines have visited and their enthusiasm confirms we are on the right track.” Also Bertoy had an excellent fair: “Crocodile Creek again went great. And our new brand Green Toys that is made of recycled plastic milk jugs also got a lot of attention.
