kf video 6 & 7 july

Take a look at the kleine fabriek #19 video here!

The 19th edition of kleine fabriek that took place on Sunday 6 & Monday 7 July in Amsterdam RAI brought a lot of inspiration, up-to-date trend information and a lot of extra’s.

Kleine fabriek is already looking forward to the next season and hopes that the next winter edition 18 & 19 January 2015 will bring as much positive views together

summer edition buzzed with professionalism

kleine fabriek july 2014 rvdaThe kick-off to the 19th edition of kleine fabriek last Sunday was an hour later than normal due to the extra-long football match by the Dutch team the night before, but from that moment on, it was all go! Everyone loved kleine fabriek’s new hall, new layout and its open look. Much was said about the balance between issues of the heart and those of the mind, about that branch of top-level sport that we call entrepreneurship, over the importance of chain-wide transparency and getting your story right.

Vingino: acte-de-présence

vingino at kleine fabriekEntrepreneurship is just an ‘old-fashioned’ word that means you have to know all the ins and outs and more in order to provide each other and the customers with the best possible service. A brief tour of the kleine fabriek:

At the back of BLOCK was Ludo Onnink, who attracted lots of people with his large, pavilion-like Vingino stand. ‘We’re here primarily as an ‘acte-de-présence’. Vingino is a major player in the Dutch market and we don’t really need to attract more clients here like we do at the trade fair in Italy. However, the clients like it here anyway read more

kleine fabriek july 2014 RVDAJohan van de Perre of IKKS introduced his new brand Sorry 4 the mess; funky, creative, and of highly competitive quality for mid-segment prices thanks to the know-how of Groupe Zannier, the company behind the brands. Van de Perre is delighted with kleine fabriek: ‘A great place, great collaboration, a compact hall, refreshing and friendly, because children’s clothing always has to be fun.’ read more

entrepeneurs

Beatrix NY Skribbies kleine fabriek RVDARajko Oppier of Sole Brands was clearly happy with Beatrix NY and Skribbies, and pleasantly surprised by all the international visitors and the hubbub of the Parade. With his professional background in Risk Management, he opts for brands with continuous and unique collections for which clients can place orders all year round. Skribbies shoes, for example, can be decorated with new drawings day after day read more

presentations & workshops

presentations & workshops kleine fabriek RVDAAs soon as they arrived, visitors were told about the programme of talks on offer, making sure they didn’t have to miss a thing. Kirsten Jassies, for example, who talked about major influences in social media, and Jan Agelink who did a piece on trend stories, attracted maximum audiences. Even ‘simple’ activities such as a workshop on photography using your smartphone proved highly popular.

kleine fabriek july 2014Maarten Kokkeler from M-agency exhibited an entire range of brands including Flo, Someone Kids, Little Eleven Paris and the new girls’ label Nice Things in FAME. ‘It’s great isn’t it? VinginoThis Summer, Vingino will be back at kleine fabriek, with a huge 150 sqm stand. The Dutch brand – often perceived to be Italian because of the name – is working on its international expansion. Last year, the focus was on Italy with a participation in Pitti Bimbo, a sales office in Riccione and the appointment of a country manager.

The Netherlands however, is and will always be the strong home base.  “Kleine fabriek has proven to be a leading trade fair within the industry, that’s why we have decided to exhibit again, after a gap of several years. We feel it is important  to invest in our clients,” says Vingino’s Ludo Onnink. “At kleine fabriek we meet both our first-time customers from the Netherlands, as potential new international clients.”

Junior Fashion – a true trade in every sense of the word

entree kleine fabriek RVDAChildren’s fashion and lifestyle trade fair kleine fabriek was bustling with enthusiasm on Sunday 19 January and Monday 20 January in Amsterdam RAI. Durf, Duurzaam and Delen (Daring, Sustainable and Sharing), the three D’s that are central to the new-style entrepreneurship according to Lieke Lamb of Bureau Trendwatcher, were clearly noticeable. Stop complaining and do something, work hard and, above all, work together – that’s the spirit. Children’s fashion is once again recognised as a true trade, with the added bonus of an inspiring influx of new entrepreneurs from both the Netherlands and abroad.

emile et ida at sta(i)rs

sta(i)rs emile et ida RVDAErna Kisjes of Lux Agency introduced the beautiful French Emile et Ida in Sta(i)rs, the try-out platform for inspiring new labels. “This is more transparent than a stand, the threshold is lower for people to browse. And with a third of the collection, I can give a good picture of what we stand for.” Erna is more happy than surprised, “I’m seeing a lot of new faces, new and also young entrepreneurs who are taking children’s fashion seriously as a trade.”

fashion club 70

liu jo kleine fabriek RVDA

Luc Dheedene of the Antwerp-based designer label empire Fashion Club 70 also had something new to present: Liu Jo, 7 For All Mankind jeans, and Michael Kors and Liu Jo shoes. He says thoughtfully: “In this business, you have to give it your all again and again. Attracting new customers with new products is key. Customers switch faster, brands go up and down. Everything is in constant motion and media, bloggers and consumers can set off a chain reaction. We have to follow this rhythm and continue to stimulate.”

.”

The extra mile

zadig et voltaire kleine fabriek RVDAThe kleine fabriek’s fair floor was buzzing with passion for the trade. The bottom line: If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. A quick recap:

In the Star segment, a visibly thrilled Clement van der Linden presented the Parisian label Zadig & Voltaire, sophisticated cool for stores with an edge, as well as from Spain, Mayoral. And while he was at it, he proudly showed some pictures of Van Der Linden Agenturen’s new building. He also talked about the hard work involved. “We don’t think twice about hopping on the TGV to view a collection in Paris for 15 minutes, or flying to Copenhagen and back. Sometimes we have to get up at four in the morning.” The message: without the proverbial extra mile, you simply would not make it in today’s highly competitive environment. And that also goes for stores.

Optimistic trends

lezing zw kleine fabriek RVDAThe trend lecture ‘Youth Icons 2014’ by Peter van Woensel Kooy, with critical comments from his two young sons who were present in the room, was packed with examples of progressive and creative solutions. Hipsters taking over entire city districts with new-style businesses (collective initiatives, local ventures ). And the new role model Daan Roosegaarde with his mind-blowing unorthodox solutions that combine hardcore science and pure creativity. The slogan ‘De Daantjes Komen’ (The Daantjes Are Coming) heralded new dawn of decisiveness and optimism. Duncan Stutterheim, with his exciting ideas for the old Shell Tower on the IJ in Amsterdam-Noord, is another leading figure in the modern entrepreneurship movement. An energetic mix of professional knowledge and skill..

Prêt à Pregnant and more

pret a pregnant studio kleine fabriek RVDAAt the live studio of Prêt à Pregnant’s professional blogger team the most stunning eye-catchers of the labels present at the fair were photographed. And if they had a spare second, there were expert lectures for both exhibitors and visitors to enjoy. So much to see, so much to share. Kleine fabriek looks back on this winter edition with a great sense of satisfaction. An edition where old-school F2F (face to face) communication was reinvented in a big way. We look forward to SS15!

Live Specials!

Outside Elsa Dray-FargesThe ‘fashion parade’ on Sunday announced earlier is not the only thing that will cause a stir on the trade show floor. There will be lots more live specials in the programme: Janine Breukhoven-Kho, for instance, from the successful Dutch blog Prêt à Pregnant, will be on the spot for two days working on her ‘best buys’ pages with her photographer and two stylists. Speaking of experts: teenage bloggers will also be on hand on Sunday. Armed with cameras, a printer and scissors, they will be creating a large moodboard live, with everything that makes their heart beat faster. A real must-see for buyers! For intangible inspiration, kleine fabriek will be featuring a hip soundtrack, performed live by wandering singer-songwriters. And the international magazine Kid’s Wear will be bringing along artist-in-residence Elsa Dray-Farges, who will be presenting a selection of her enchanting papier-mâché illustrations and sketching passers-by live. Strike a pose!

First time at kleine fabriek:

McGregor

American style sportswear and the college-look are an important source of inspiration for many children’s brands. That’s why we are really pleased we may welcome one of the founders of this style: McGregor. The brand was established in 1921 by a Scottish member of the ‘McGregor clan’, who soon got a reputation for his “co-ordinated sportswear” for men and his famous classic tartan.

Today the original brand value – Anglo American heritage – can still be found in the collections, also in the children’s collection. Check them out at kleine fabriek.

brand list online

In order to offer clarity and to ensure that all brands presented are easy to locate, kleine fabriek divided the fair floor in 4 segments: Star, Industry, Blueprint and Object+. Kleine fabriek offers a segmentation that is differentiated by lifestyle, image and distribution. Every segment has its own stand design and look and feel. For participating brands of the 18th edition of kleine fabriek, take a look at the brand list HERE.

jetpaq fbStraight from the (graduation) catwalk and this winter at kleine fabriek: Jetpaq! Designer Jet Teunis graduated  last summer at ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten and will present her first collection in Sta(i)rs.

Divided and happening

object websiteAmsterdam RAI’s Hall 8 is, as always, divided into different clear and orderly segments, including the successful stages for start-ups. In the previous edition, the Object+ area, with lifestyle products including bedding, furniture, interior accessories and toys, introduced a basic stand concept specifically for brands that have small-scale products or collections. This accessible presentation possibility has been revamped for this edition and offers a wonderful opportunity to ‘get a taste of’ the market or ‘tease’ the market with something special.

In the Star area for the ‘stars’ of children’s fashion, clothing, shoes and accessory labels with a unique designer signature, Sta(i)rs offers the perfect stage for first appearances. And for visitors to Sta(i)rs that is named after the ladders incorporated in this presentation model’s construction, it is the place to scout for new, exclusive labels.

Each season the segments Blueprint, for labels with roots in denim, and Industry, with its popular and trendy brands for kids and teenagers, are always brimming with must-see collections and product launches. All the extra initiatives, including various pop-up stores, speeches and trend presentations, and the successful Space Only stand option in which brands can create an entirely unique experience, will ensure that this winter edition of kleine fabriek is again the place to be!

short report

kf #17 July 2013 by RVDAWidely known newcomers like Gaastra sounded pleased: “There’s a good atmosphere here; for us, this is an easy way to come into contact with new customers and we get a chance to see our existing customers as well. You can tell that the shops are ready for something new,” said Ronald Kempke.

Dominique Jourdain of Miss Grant and Microbe also saw clear interest in the new season: “Although my niche of exclusive children’s specialist shops is fairly stable, we do see that people have grown tired of the term ‘crisis’. Last season went badly, so people are really ready for the new season. This trade fair has been very productive for me.”

sta(i)rs for start-ups

kf #17 hilda.henri by RVDAMany compliments to kleine fabriek, for the great atmosphere, the lovely design, the lay-out, the clear areas and the presentation program. At the Sta(i)rs area, the try-out platform for young designer labels, Verena Wondrak of Hilda.Henri from Vienna is especially enthusiastic about how friendly the people were that looked after her. “Coming to Amsterdam was a conscious choice for us; Northern Europe is a great market for our sustainable, all-seasons, pure wool label.”

kid's wear trend presentation by RVDAWhether it were the exhibitors or Angelique Hoorn Management, with her fashion illustrators giving live performances at the cafés and selling their work for the CliniClowns Foundation, or the exquisite original 3D trend presentation of Kid’s Wear Magazine for kleine fabriek, everyone felt the spark of new collaborations, the need for a new approach and the excitement about the quality we’ll be capable of achieving if we view the industry as one big co-creation. Kleine fabriek is already looking forward to its next opportunity to contribute!

So put the dates for the next edition of kleine fabriek in your calendar: 19 & 20 January 2014

newcomer review

kf #17 Protest by RVDAWith great confidence, Patricia Lagerweij of Protest launched her new girls’ label June-D in the Industry area: “Positive responses have been pouring in. Of course, it helps that customers already know me and that we’re familiar with the back office, but June-D also offers more than a great, trendy collection. We offer ready-to-deliver workshops for in the shops themselves, such as ‘Pimp my sunglasses’ or ‘Pimp my bag’, and our designers do panels with girls from the target group. We’re very active, and in times like these that’s what we all need to be. Most people at kleine fabriek are really working hard at their companies.”

the new summer season

kf #17 by RVDAThe atmosphere at the 17th edition of kleine fabriek on Sunday 7 and Monday 8 July in Amsterdam was good. Although it was a bit quieter in terms of visitor numbers than last season, many buyers from abroad attended kleine fabriek and exhibitors enjoyed the positive atmosphere and the quality of the visiting retailers. “Everyone here is really dedicated.” After an undeniably difficult season, brands, retailers and other creative professionals are in the mood for ‘something new’. Working together at all levels is the motto in the children’s fashion and lifestyle industry.

No matter who we talked to at kleine fabriek, collegiality and entrepreneurial spirit prevailed. ‘True entrepreneurs now have the ability to stand out’, was a widely shared view. On top of the “cutthroat competition” at a product level, more than ever participants are also looking at each other’s reputations, as well as mutual and joint initiatives. Complaining – even about the weather – has become taboo

kf for charity shop

cliniclownsAt the ‘kleine fabriek for charity’ shop you could buy utterly desirable products, customized by the illustrators from Angelique Hoorn Agency. For example t-shirts and baby bodies -generously donated by Claesen’s- cotton tote bags and other cool stuff. The pieces are made from milled loden, an Alpine farming fabric in pure new wool, that is normally used for traditional costumes. Striking details such wool borders, embroideries and frayed woven edges give the collection the particular handwriting. koeka celebrates its 15th anniversary

IMG_7922 (Medium)How it all began ….
Koeka has its origins in the Netherlands when it was founded in 1998 by Margareth de Haas and Jeannette Kraaijeveld. Two mothers, with a background in fashion, simply looking for basic functional products for their children. What they sought was not for sale, so they decided to develop it themselves: Margareth as the creative engine and Jeannette arranged the technical expertise. Initially sewing their own products themselves. The brand name was already in place; KOEKA, named after the binky cloth of Margareth’s nephew, which he called his ‘ Koeka’.

havaianas baby brasilAlready referred to as the “best rubber sandal in the world,” The Zori (the Japanese sandal) was the inspiration for the creation of the Havaianas sandal in 1962. The name Havaianas (pronounced ah-vai-YAH-nas), Portuguese for Hawaiians, was a tribute to America’s glamorous holiday destination. The addictive nature of these flip flops is largely due to a 42-year old secret rubber formula, which makes them butter-soft, bouncy, flexible and durable.

The idea for the new sandal was so simple that its success spread like wild-fire. In less than a year, São Paulo Alpargatas was making five pairs of Havaianas every second; which adds up to 125 million pairs per year. Since their launch, 2.2 billion pairs of Havaianas sandals have been produced and sold throughout the world. If the sandals were laid end to end, they would go around the world 50 times.

Havaianas will present their baby & kids collection at the Industry area at kleine fabriek, for the ultimate summer vibe!

As well as a noticeable amount of nature and wild animals for girls, and a strong fascination with ‘space’ and other discovery journeys for boys, the overall impression is much more toned down and quiet when contrasted with the loud, bright and  ‘bling’ children’s fashion we have seen in previous seasons.

positive vibe kf #16

At the 16th edition of kleine fabriek, last Sunday 13 and Monday 14 January in the Amsterdam RAI, there was a refreshing and positive atmosphere. A busy Sunday, with a striking number of international visitors, was matched by the quality of the visitors attending on Monday, a day that traditionally attracts more press contacts. Feedback has hardly ever been so unanimous: the industry has finished its grumbling about the economic tide, the lion seems to have been tamed. “We all need to work a little bit harder and be more inventive, to break the cycle. And meanwhile, a whole new generation of brands and retailers have popped up that don’t know it any other way.” read more

Parents who don’t feel like going back to the 80′s don’t need to worry: a neon accessory is enough to spice up a basic look.

#15 kid’s wear video of kleine fabriek

Our media partner kid’s wear magazine made this inspiring short movie of kleine fabriek. Have a look to find out what the collections are all about.

short report: star

The biggest floor space went to the Star area for high-end fashion brands like Bellerose, IKKS and Petit Bateau and for brands with a distinctive own handwriting such as Kidscase, Logoshirt and Molo Kids. Wintermans Agenturen, that represents among others Little Marc Jacobs, Timberland, Guess and Frankie Morello was delighted: “We are very satisfied, we have a splendid location and a very good fair with great reactions to our brands.” A bit further, Belgian Alain de Vreese from Stones & Bones says: “Kleine fabriek is compact and flexible, well-timed, and -quite important for us-  it attracts a lot of international visitors. The Netherlands is trendsetting in the colourful fashion that catches on everywhere now.”

short report: industry & blueprint

Via tough metal-grey Industry area for ‘high trend-sensitive’ denim- and sportswear-related brands like Björn Borg, O’Neill, Tumble ’n Dry and Japan Rags visitors encountered the cool Blueprint area that was designed like a ‘building site’ surrounded by scaffolding. In this innovative denim area market leaders like Levi’s and Diesel met with smaller innovators like Retour Denim de Luxe or real street culture icons such as Etnies. Many visitors had to ‘acclimatize just a moment’ but as Diesel’s Vanessa Reijnders remarked: “Now is just the right time to innovate. For the children’s market this innovative style might seem a little strange, but we already know Blueprint from Modefabriek and are very positive.” Levi’s also reacts enthusiastically: “it is fresh, new and it brings vivacity.”

short report: object+

In front of the beautiful Europahal visitors were introduced to the new Object+ area, formerly known as Home & Gift. In a minimalistic light grey setting the best children’s lifestyle brands presented the most beautiful bed linen, children’s room art, schoolbags and design toys. Rosie Flo’s colouring books from the UK exhibited for the first time at kleine fabriek. Owner Steve Kamlish is pleasantly surprised. He noticed children’s fashion stores come here to look for unique goodies to spice up their clothing collections and his first impression of kleine fabriek was “relaxed, well organised, happy atmosphere and a lot of press.”

kleine fabriek trend book

During this 15th edition of kleine fabriek, we present you trend space. Our exhibition and trend book will provide visitors, exhibitors and other interested parties with an insight into various emerging trends.

Kleine fabriek trend book includes research on emerging fashion trends, in order to provide the best possible buyer advice. The book also discusses trends in children’s retail. shoes @kleinefabriek

A ‘must have’ in most summer wardrobes are  Havaianas flip flops, cool Etnies sneakers and comfortable Toms shoes with the ‘one-for one’ concept: with every pair purchased, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. These three popular brands are all present at kleine fabriek.  Favourites with a more classic style are the high quality Gallucci shoes, Old Soles and newcomers from Spain Mon, Manuela de Juan. From France the cute eco-firendly Easy Peasy and this is just a small selection from the range of shoe brands that are present in 3 different areas: Star, Industry and Blueprint.

blueprint

Blueprint at last, is the new area for denim, where a development towards authenticity and innovation can be seen. In this cool and rudimentary setting, market leaders like Levi’s, Diesel and Replay show their highlights, but also the coolest street wear brands like legendary skateboard shoe label Etnies. And fearless youngsters like Retour Denim De Luxe with their favourite tall skinny fit, and the cool leather children’s belts by Cowboysbelt. Something old, something new, from all 4 areas Blueprint might be the coolest. Click here for all the brands in Blueprint.

object+

Object+ is the new name for the Home & Gift area where the most beautiful lifestyle brands gather in a minimalistic light-grey decor. Here you will find international successful Dutch brands such as Koeka, that always complements its baby- and children clothing line with matching accessories, toys and children’s room textiles, and Pakhuis Oost, favourite for their inspiring collections of fashion- and interior accessories made from cool materials like metallic leather or indestructible and ecological paper. read more

newcomer @kleinefabriek

kf ♥ restaurant week kids

Not all children like to eat a typical kids menu of hamburger, hotdogs and fries. Families who are ready for something more adventurous can check out a great selection of Amsterdam restaurants during the upcoming Restaurant Week Kids. From April 29th to May 6th all kinds of eateries offer a special gastronomic menu for children and their company. We gladly recommend Restaurant Stork that is situated close to our office and has a great view, as well as Bridges, to be known as one of the best restaurants in town. A three course dinner is offered for €30 for adults and €15 for kids. A 3 course lunch is €25/12,50. Of every meal €1,50 is donated to charity organization Cliniclowns.

KF #14 – Toms:  “In this glitter style, Toms become more of a fashion statement, but never over the top because of it basic classic model!”

kf ♥ eye film

Amsterdam has got a new cultural hot spot. Eye, the Dutch national film institute, moved from it’s cosy historic building in Vondelpark to the waterfront on the North side of the city, opposite Amsterdam Central Station. It’s new home is quite spectacular, giving the impression a space shuttle landed on the banks of the IJ. Eye is more than a movie theatre, showing productions that span the entirety of international film history: from silent films dating back to the start of cinema to the newest digital productions. It is also an exhibition centre and organises all kinds of projects and events related to film. For children there is a special program a few days a week, with special events during the holidays. Last but not least: it is a great spot to have lunch or diner with a view, inside or outside. Pedestrians and bicyclists can hope on a free ferry behind CS to reach Eye.

KF #14 – Joe Color:  “We love this jacket. Sure, it’s not for everyone but if you feel gutsy and you’re into bright & shiny, this is the one to have. When fed up with mainstream, Joe Color is the brand to buy!”

it’s a dotty world out there!

Those of you that visited kleine fabriek in January will probably remember our ‘dot’ theme. And it’s funny how you start seeing dots everywhere once you got them on your mind. We noticed plenty in the collections shown by exhibitors. Maybe we were all inspired by 84 year old Japanese artist Kusama and her World of Dots. She began using polka dots in her artistic work when she was only 10 and they have been part of her artistic signature ever since. We’d love to check out her present exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane Australia, or Tate Modern in London,  but even online she is amazing!

KF #14 – Zoeppritz (home & gift area): “Our elephant lamp is our best sold item. We hear it is not easy to find interesting things for the boy’s room, so this elephant definitely fills a gap!” (German firm Zoeppritz since 1828 is represented by Aricamare in the Netherlands.)

rintje!

With every collection, the popularity of the brand Anne-Claire Petit Accessories is growing. This leads to new co-operations.
With Dutch writer / illustrator Sieb Posthuma this led to a 3D Rintje. This fox terriër is well known through his weekly adventures in Dutch national newspaper NRC.
After 10 years Rintje said goodbye to the newspaper, but that does not mean that his fans can not see him anymore. From now on, you can follow him and his adventures here.

figures kf #14

Last edition kleine fabriek took place on 15 and 16 January 2012.  Hall 8 of the Amsterdam RAI with 13.000 sqm, was filled with a strong variety of renowned favourites and exciting new brands. Children’s fashion, shoes, accessories and a real home & gift department: all product groups were well represented. At the 263 stands, 5.500 buyers found 393 brands from 26 different countries. Exhibitors were thrilled about the fact that foreign retailers (more than 20% of the total number visiting) and above all Belgians and Germans, again found their way to the trade show. After this positive start of the buying season, the whole sector can be of good cheer.

KF #14 – Petit Bateau: “This yellow rain coat is famous. It has been part of the collection for years and is typical Petit Bateau for many people. It’s amazing how the perfect raincoat never goes out of style.”

KF allee

KF #14: The lay-out of the fair floor and the clear segmentation were well received by the visitors. Right at the entrance, two huge gates showed the way to the home & gift department and the KF allee. The baby brands and “teen jeans” were also clearly grouped together. New nearly ‘couture’ brand My Little Dress Up showed their collection in KF allee, along with Little Marc Jacobs, Yporqué, Soft Gallery, Lucky Wang, Twin-Set Girl, Ninaluna, Dreamers, Patrizia Pepe, Etnies, Rubber Duck and Sprout by Gro.
My Little Dress Up’s designer duo was very satisfied about their first trade show experience. “Our collection is not that easy so we are super happy with all positive reactions we received here. All significant magazines have visited and their enthusiasm confirms we are on the right track.” Also Bertoy had an excellent fair: “Crocodile Creek again went great. And our new brand Green Toys that is made of recycled plastic milk jugs also got a lot of attention. It was great to hear that several journalists already knew it from the United States and are happy that it is now available in the Benelux. After all, they are the trend watchers.”

flash mob outfitters nation

Danish brand Outfitters Nation did not have a regular stand at kleine fabriek, but participated in the event with a so-called flash mob: a group of swinging teenagers showed the new outfitters nation collection.
